Vitamins-Do We Need Them?
In a perfect world, everyone would have a healthy, happy life.
To have a balanced life, we must have at least 45 minutes of brisk exercise daily, lots of fresh air and nutritious foods. We would sit at the farmers table and eat the produce and meats that the farm provided.
Well, our lives aren’t perfect.
With our fast paced lifestyle, long working hours, stress and family demands; preparing healthy, nutritious meals, seven days a week is near to impossible.
As well, with our modern big corporate farming practices of producing the greatest crop yield per acre of land, the food that we eat has less and less nutritional value.
Here is the number of servings the Canada’s Food Guide recommends for a woman aged 19-50 years of age.
- 7-8 vegetables and fruit
- 9-7 grain products
- 2milk and alternatives
- 2meat and alternatives
- 2-3 Tbsp. of unsaturated oils and fats
Let’s look at quantity per day. Here are a few examples:
- Vitamin E-33Tsp. of peanut butter
- Vitamin C- 7 cups of cantaloupe
- Folic Acid- 6 cups of baked beans
- Thiamine-3.3 lbs. of pork
- Riboflavin- 7.75 quarts of low fat milk
- Niacin – 1.5 chicken breasts
- Vitamin B6- 22 bananas
- Magnesium- 4.2 cups of peas
- Vitamin B12 -4.2 lbs. Of ground beef
Our health is like a house that needs a good foundation, solid walls and a roof to protect you through the years. Your body needs care and effort to give you years of service without falling apart.
The vitamins and minerals in the food that we eat are the tools our bodies use to perform the regular maintenance that keeps our bodies healthy.
