Thanksgiving Weekend is a great time to get together with Family and Friends; to enjoy the company, share a meal and reflect on the many blessings that we have.
It feels so good to sit around the table together eating a good meal, talking about what’s happening in our lives, having some laughs and catching up on what is happening with others. Not only are we feeding our bodies, we are feeding our soul.
It has been proven that the deep emotional connections with family and friends reduces stress, creates happiness and keeps you healthy.
People who have a strong social network:
•Tend to live longer
•The heart and blood pressure respond better
•Handle stress better
•Have a healthier endocrine system
•Healthier cardiovascular function
•Enhances the immune system
There is an actual physical part of the brain that runs your emotions called the limbic brain. When you spend time with other people, your limbic brain is tuning in to them, being changed by their moods and changing theirs in turn. Psychologists have proven that we share moods. Think of the people who make you feel better simply by talking to them.
Women are better than men at keeping the limbic dance going by working to ensure that families stay connected and by building lasting friendships and deep connections from the many different aspects of their lives.
Recently much of the social wellness research has focused on later life. Researchers believe that social connectedness and the power of relationships attribute to our overall happiness and successful aging.
Family and friends provide an outlet for our emotions and a meaningful network of support. They can give us a fresh perspective, provide emotional space from our problems and keep us grounded.
So, on this Thanksgiving Weekend, take the opportunity to stay connected with your family and friends. It’s good for your health.
